Roof maintenance checks you can make from the ground

Updated 9 October 2026 · By Efficient Roofing Ltd

White rendered house with a slate roof and brick chimney

Roof maintenance checks twice a year, in spring and autumn, catch most problems while they are still small. All of these can be done from the ground, a window or the loft hatch. None of them need a ladder.

From the ground

Use binoculars or your phone camera zoom. Look for slipped or missing tiles, gaps along the ridge, lead lifted at the chimney and moss building up in valleys.

Gutters and downpipes

Watch them in heavy rain. Overflowing, dripping joints and water running down the wall all point to a blockage or a failed joint.

In the loft

With a torch, look for daylight, damp patches, wet felt and stained timbers, especially round the chimney and at the eaves.

Inside the house

Check ceilings under the roof for stains, especially after heavy rain and wind.

What to leave to a roofer

Anything that means going up a ladder or onto the roof. We check the roof and clear the gutters.
